Alongside Venice ’s Biennale, the documenta of Kassel is seen as the most important, regularly occurring exhibition for modern and contemporary art in the world. The exhibition took place for the first time in 1955 thanks to the efforts of the artist and designer Arnold Bode. It has been staged first every four and now every five years since that time. Since the fifth documenta (1972), a new artistic director has been named for each documenta exhibition.
